Abstract

Grief is a psychosocial response frequently experienced by people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Understanding its stages is important as they influence self-acceptance, treatment adherence, and quality of life. This study aimed to identify the stages of grief among PLWHA at Kotaraja Health Centre, Jayapura, Papua. A descriptive quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted. A total of 122 respondents were recruited using the Slovin formula based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from Kübler-Ross's five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance). Univariate analysis was used to describe the distribution of grief stages. The majority of respondents (84.4%) were in the acceptance stage. Other stages — denial (81.1%), anger (83.6%), bargaining (80.3%), and depression (82.0%) — appeared at low levels. The high level of acceptance indicates that ongoing psychosocial support has the potential to encourage PLWHA to adapt to their health condition and forms the basis for developing more targeted nursing interventions.
