Abstract

Malaria recurrence remains a challenge to malaria control efforts in the working area of Puskesmas Waibu, Jayapura Regency, highlighting the need to strengthen cadre supervision through counseling, treatment evaluation, and treatment monitoring. Malaria cadres play a central role in ensuring patient adherence to treatment and monitoring possible recurrence through direct visits and communication with the community. This study aimed to determine the relationship between cadre supervision and malaria recurrence in the working area of Puskesmas Waibu, Jayapura Regency, in 2026. A quantitative observational analytic design with a retrospective case-control approach was used, with a sample of 94 respondents consisting of 47 cases and 47 controls, selected using purposive sampling at a 1:1 ratio. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire comprising 12 items measuring three components of cadre supervision, namely counseling, treatment evaluation, and treatment monitoring, and analyzed using the chi-square test and odds ratio (OR) calculation. Treatment evaluation showed the strongest relationship with malaria recurrence (p = 0.001; OR = 4.40), followed by cadre counseling (p = 0.004; OR = 3.47), while treatment monitoring showed no significant relationship (p = 0.058). Strengthening cadre capacity in counseling and treatment evaluation should be prioritized in efforts to control malaria recurrence in endemic areas.
